The persistent rise in prices of essential goods and services, such as food, housing, and energy, above people’s incomes has meant that slight or marginal cost increases disproportionately affect the lowest earners.
Governments must demonstrate and convince their citizens that they are a trusted steward of public finances and that the programmes they seek to fund with taxes are necessary.
